Do You Have What It Takes... Professionally?– Part 3
Do the materials you use measure up?

In our ongoing report from an effective project at the Furman University Center of Excellence, we give you three points concerning the need for improved preparation of teachers of low-achieving students that successful teachers consider very important.  (Included after each point are unedited responses of participating teachers.)

Teachers of low achievers need to:

•  Adapt Materials to Appropriate Levels
"Skills in preparing teacher-made materials to fit special skill needs."
"Ability to adapt 'average' materials and supplies to meet the needs of low achievers."

•  Develop and Utilize Manipulatives
"Ability to create and use concrete manipulatives."
"Low achievers often work better with manipulative experiences.  Teachers should have knowledge in this area."

•  Utilize a Wide VARIETY of Materials
"A willingness to try new ideas and to search for new ideas to repeat skills in a challenging way.  Low achievers often get bored easily, but they love computers!"

Information above has been taken from the book At Risk, Low-Achieving Students by Judy Brown Lehr and Hazel Wiggins Harris and published by National Education Association, Washington D.C.
