You can make this project even more meaningful by introducing vocabulary, math, writing, research, and reading. Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<p><i>Vocabulary<\/i> &#8211; While doing this activity be sure to use key vocabulary terms, such as <i>ballot<\/i>, <i>candidate<\/i>, <i>election<\/i>, and so on.<\/p>\n<p><i>Math<\/i> &#8211; Counting, adding, graphing, percents, the list goes on and on. Students can tally the votes and turn this information into bar graphs, percentages, and more.<\/p>\n<p><i>Writing<\/i> &#8211; Take the time to teach students about persuasive writing. Then, have each student make a campaign poster for their character. Along with drawing a picture of the character, or printing one offline, they should also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">L<\/span>ist at least three reasons this character should be president.*<br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">*<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Choose any title<\/span><\/span>: governor, senator, or even class mascot.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">C<\/span>reate a campaign slogan. <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><i><b>Tip:<\/b> <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">This <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">is a <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">wonderful<\/span> way to<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">reinforce you<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">r lessons on fact and op<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">i<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">nion.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Once students have created their campaign posters, split students into about five or six groups. Much like political parties, these groups should have something in common, for instance group cartoon characters together, book characters together, and super heroes together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Primary Election<\/b><\/span><br \/>\nNow have students present their character to their group, explaining why this person\/character should become president. <i><b>Tip:<\/b><\/i> <i>This would be a great time to discuss or interject a lesson on persuasive writing and\/or speaking.<\/i> After each student has presented their candi<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">date to their group, <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">e<\/span><\/span>ach small group should take a vote choosing <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">which <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">candi<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">date<\/span><\/span><\/span> they want to represent their group<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">, or <\/span>political party<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">, <\/span>in the general election.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>General Election<\/b><\/span><br \/>\nOnce each group (political party) has chosen a candidate, the five students who won the primary election will present their character to the entire class.<\/p>\n<p>After each student has given their speech, create a simple ballot form or download this ballot to complete, and make enough copies for each student &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rempub.com\/image\/data\/Tips\/Blank-Voting-Ballot-for-Students-Free-Download-Remedia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free download<\/a>&gt;.<\/p>\n<p>On voting day, set up voting booths at the back of the classroom. A simple way to do this would be to put a large, open cardboard box on its side, on top of a desk. Students can take turns going to the polls throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>As each student casts their vote, they can slip their ballot into the the ballot box.<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> An<\/span> empty tissue box will do just fine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">If you have any students absent during this project, create an absentee ballot so that these students can be involved in the voting process as well. Have <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">these <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">students research<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> and <\/span>write about what a<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">n absentee ballot is and how it felt to take part <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">in voting <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">like this.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Tally the Votes! <\/b><\/span><br \/>\nHave a few students count the votes to find out <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">who<\/span> won.
