Doing this involves an abstract level of thinking and can, therefore, be a complicated skill to teach, especially to students who struggle with reading. With practice though, students can become comfortable with the skill before having to tackle the concept while reading. These <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">five<\/span> activities will give your students a chance to practice making inferences without reading.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Plate Faces<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What You\u2019ll Need:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-m0sl8hfsoLw\/VCWuPqLYhaI\/AAAAAAAAAEs\/LPagOJ3GOyE\/s1600\/Face-Plate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor: move;\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-m0sl8hfsoLw\/VCWuPqLYhaI\/AAAAAAAAAEs\/LPagOJ3GOyE\/s1600\/Face-Plate.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"153\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">1-2 Paper Plates per Student<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Markers or Crayons<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Have each student choose two emotions (or assign each student two emotions): surprised, mad, sad, happy, bored, or scared. Have each student draw a face showing their chosen emotion on each of their plates. When everyone\u2019s plates are decorated, you&#8217;re ready to play!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Give students a short scenario and ask them to show the face\/emotion that they think the person in the scenario is feeling. For example,\u00a0<i>The puppy chewed mom\u2019s shoes.<\/i> Students with a mad- or sad-face plates should be showing <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">their pla<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">tes<\/span><\/span>. Simply <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>isplay a picture for you<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">r students<\/span> and <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">dis<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">cuss<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> as a class or small group what can be inferred from the image.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Depending on your students\u2019 level, you may start with simple pictures, like the drawing of a dog. Some students may see something unexpected. <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">These<\/span> students may have a very valid reason for explaining an image differently than expected. Be sure to <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">e<\/span>ncourage students to discuss and support their reasons. For instance, the drawing of the dog\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">a<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">bove<\/span><\/span> may seem mean <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">or<\/span> scary to some students, but to others who have never experience a dog like this, they may think the dog is playing. As <span style=\"font-size: small;\">student<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">s grasp simple images progress onto more complex images that seem to tell <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">a whole<\/span> story (see<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">the picture below of the dog and cha<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">lk<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">-rainbow).<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">You can even make this <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">exercise<\/span> a writing activity<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">w<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">here <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">students<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> write one or two sentences explaining <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">their<\/span> inference. <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Or<\/span> turn the <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">assignment<\/span> into a daily journ<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">a<\/span><\/span>l opportunity where students reflect on the image, make <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">an inference, and<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\/or write a story<\/span><\/span> based on their inference.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We\u2019ve created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/remediapub\/specific-rdg-skills-thru-pics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinterest<\/a> board loaded with images that you can use to practice making inferences.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Write an Inference<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Wha<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">t You&#8217;ll Need:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Pencil\/Paper <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The best authors <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">don&#8217;t tell you what&#8217;s happening, they show you. They paint a picture of a scene or a cha<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">rac<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">ter with their words, and<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> the read<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">er <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">knows exactly what is going on through inference<\/span><\/span><\/span>. Challenge your student<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">s to <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">&#8220;show<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">, <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">don&#8217;t tell&#8221; in this writing <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">assign<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">ment<\/span>. <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Here are a few suggestions<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: and support their inferences on a piece of paper or you can do this activity as a class discussion&#8211;just use your whiteboard.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">F<\/span>old a piece of paper into three columns. At the top of each column write, <i>What I Know<\/i>, <i>Inference<\/i>, and <i>Proof\/Support<\/i>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Help students complete their first graphic organizer using something they are comfortable with making an inference about, like a <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">story they&#8217;ve already read or a picture<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">As an example, let\u2019s use the picture of the dog <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">above<\/span>. In the first column, <i>What I Know<\/i>, you would write, \u201cIn the picture, there is a dog and chalk-drawn rainbow. The dog has chalk on his fur.\u201d In the second column, <i>Inference<\/i>, you would write, \u201cMy inference is that the dog laid down on the chalk rainbow.\u201d In the third column, <i>Proof\/Support<\/i>, you would write, \u201cI can infer that the dog laid in the chalk rainbow because there is colorful chalk all over his fur.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Students can use this same process while reading.
