Let&#8217;s start by introducing students to the pumpkin with their senses.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: large;\"><b>Sensory Boxes<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>You will need:<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Fresh\/raw pumpkin seeds<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Cooked or store-bought pumpkin seeds<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> 4 shoe boxes with lids or <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">empty tissue boxes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Scissors (to cut holes in boxes<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">,<\/span> not necessary <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">if you <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">use tissue boxes<\/span><\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Tape (to keeps lids closed, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> not necessary <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">if you <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">use tissue boxes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Blind fold or <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">bandanna<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Put fresh\/raw pumpkin seeds in 3 of the 4 boxes and label them:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <b>Smell<\/b> \u2013 Poke small holes in this box so that the students can smell the contents, but not see inside the box <b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Touch<\/b> \u2013 Cut a hand-sized hole in this box. Have the children put their hands in the box and feel the slimy\/wet seeds <b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Sound<\/b> \u2013 No holes necessary on this box. Tape the lid onto this box extra tight. Instruct the students to rattle and shake the box. <b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Taste<\/b> \u2013 Add <i>cooked or store-bought<\/i> seeds to this box. Cut a hand-sized hole in the box. Blind fold students and hand them a pumpkin seed to eat (know your students\u2019 allergies before allowing them to participate in this box). <i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>Sight<\/b> \u2013 for a unique and fun challenge, skip sight. Students will all get to use sight in the next activity.<\/i><\/span> <\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Have students sense only one box each. Allow a handful of students to sense all four boxes. This will add to your discussion later and improve students&#8217; understanding of their senses.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">After each student senses their assigned box, have them return to their desk and write down their guesses. Even have them draw a picture of their guess.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When the students have made their guesses, discuss what they felt, smelled, tasted, and heard. Encourage them to use descriptive words\u2014sticky, cold, salty, crunchy, rattle, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ask students why they guessed what they guessed. Use this opportunity to dive into a deeper discussion on the five senses.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><i><b>Tip:<\/b><\/i> You<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> could<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> even create fou<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">r stations, one <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">for each sense, with <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">each box and <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">a <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">set of inst<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">ructions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Send groups of students around to each station. Students should mak<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">e<\/span> notes and dis<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">cus<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">s<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">what they hear, feel<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">, smell, and taste at each station. Through the<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> power of <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">observation<\/span> they should <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">be able to <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">draw conclusion<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">s as to what they&#8217;ve observed. Let all of the children observe the inside and describe it.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Have students help you clean out the pumpkin and separate the seeds on <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">newspapers<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Put <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">any amount of <\/span>seeds in a jar. Have students guess how many seeds are inside the jar. Have them write down their estimates.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Have students plant a few of the seeds in clear cups so that they can watch them grow. Display the growing seeds in a prominent place. Have student draw the plant\u2019s progress each day.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Dip dried pumpkin seeds in bowls of food coloring. Then let them dry.
