Phonics | Phonemic Awareness | Prefixes | Suffixes | Fluency
Reading Decoding | Phonemic Awareness
Being able to successfully decode words is the key to becoming a confident, fluent reader.
This book was designed to support two of the essential component of the Science of Reading: Phonics and Phonemic Awareness. It’s meant for students who have already been introduced to phonics but who still need practice to attain mastery and to easily use phonics to decode words.
The focus of this book is targeted practice with prefixes and suffixes. Students are reminded of the most common prefixes and suffixes and how they change the root words they are added to. Understanding how adding a few letters to the beginning or ending of a word creates a new word with a new meaning facilitates word recognition and helps facilitate fluency.
The task card format allows for specifically targeted practice and flexible usage: homework, seatwork, warmups, independent study, etc. The short, doable activities vary in degrees of difficulty and are colorful, engaging, and fun. While some activities may be challenging, the sense of accomplishment and skills gained are worth the effort.
Activities Include:
√ Targeted practice with the following prefixes:
• un-, in-, re-
• dis-, im-, non-, mis-
• super-, de-, anti-, ex-
