Being able to successfully decode words is the key to becoming a confident, fluent reader.
This book was designed to support two of the essential component of the Science of Reading: Phonics and Phonemic Awareness. It’s meant for students who have already been introduced to phonics but who still need practice to attain mastery and to easily use phonics to decode words.
The focus of this book is targeted practice with dividing syllables. Students are reminded of the various rules and patterns for dividing multi-syllable words. Understanding how to break down words into smaller parts facilitates both pronunciation and word recognition.
The task card format allows for specifically targeted practice and flexible usage: homework, seatwork, warmups, independent study, etc. The short, doable activities vary in degrees of difficulty and are colorful, engaging, and fun. While some activities may be challenging, the sense of accomplishment and skills gained are worth the effort.
Activities Include:
√ Review of basic rules and patterns for identifying syllables
• Open and Closed Syllables
• Dividing Syllables between like and unlike consonants
• Understanding “-le” ending syllables
√ Practice with the VC/CV pattern of dividing syllables
√ Practice with dividing syllables with blends and digraphs
√ Practice with the VC/CCV & VC/CCCV patterns of dividing syllables
√ Practice with the VC/V & V/VC patterns of dividing syllables
√ Dividing syllables with a silent e and r-controlled syllables
√ Practice with the V/V pattern of dividing syllables
√ Word jumbles
√ Word puzzles
√ Solving riddles
